What is obesity? How do we know if we are overweight or obese? This is how you can find out.
THE BMI REFERENCE
Obesity refers to excess fat, in reference to standard norms, based on height and weight. There are several norms for ideal weight, compared to height.
The most commonly used reference norm is the Body Mass Index, or BMI. Calculating BMI is one of the best methods for assessment of overweight and obesity. Because calculation requires only height and weight, it is inexpensive and easy to use.
DEFINITION
The BMI is found by dividing a person's weight (in kilograms) by height twice (in square meters). Here is a table for adults.

Health Risks Associaled with Obesity
Obesity is associated with an increased risk of following diseases:

type 2 diabetes
heart disease
stroke
hypertension
gallbladder disease
osteoarthritis (degeneration of cartilage and bone in joints)
sleep apnea
asthma
cancer (endometrial, colon, kidney, gallbladder, and postmenopausal breast cancer)

To use the table, find the appropriate height in the left-hand column labeled Height. Move across to a given weight. The number at the top of the column is the BMI at that height and weight.
After calculating the BMI, check your number with the BMI/weight-status table above, and find out if you are overweight or obese.
What next?
Let's say you are obese, according to your BMI. What should be your next step?
First, realize that your over-eating problem is
partly emotional/mental,
partly due to physical cravings, especially cravings for wrong & stimulating foods
partly due to a sedentary lifestyle, and lack of exercise.
You should deal with all 3 areas, for the quickest solution, as well as a successful and lasting solution.
